A candid discussion about hugging in the workplace
A candid discussion about hugging in the workplaceA candid discussion about hugging in the workplaceFortunately, we live in an era where more people finally feel comfortable speaking up about unwanted touch and situations that make them uncomfortable. Conversations are being sparked by news from Hollywood, politics, and workplaces, as well as more casual encounters with family and friends. This leads many to askIs there any place for physical touch in the workplace?Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWe believe thereisa role for appropriate touch in work-oriented relationships.Early in our research, we found that less than 1% of employees choose Physical Touch as their primary appreciation language and it is the most frequently chosen the least liked language. But Dr. Chapman and I chose to include physical touch in the appreciation languages for two primary reasons.First, although there are clearly significant challenges, we didnt want to advocate atouchless societyevenintheworkplace. Appropriate physical touch in the proper context can be extremely meaningful. In a recentAtlantic article, developmental psychologist Tiffany Field argued that, As we get more isolated, we need platonic touch more than ever, even if we dont realize it. A vicious cycle is happening, wherein the less people initiate, the more abseits der normalitt it seems when someone does, and the more likely it is to be upsetting.Secondly, physical touch happens naturally in the workplace, largely as a demonstration of spontaneous celebration a high five when you complete a project, a fist bump when a problem is solved, or a congratulatory handshake when a major sale is closed. (For a general discussion of the appreciation language of Physical Touch, read more here.)Hugs need further discussionHugs, however, require another level of consideration. Recently, I was invited as an expert to partici pate in a media discussion about hugging (this was after significant attention given to hugging by public figures in professional relationships.) The discussion was interesting , but people largely focused on their partieal preferences. I dont want anyone outside of my family touching me, let alone hugging me Or, Im a hugger that is the way I show affection, even to friends. We can clearly affirm that there are cultural, regional and personal differences with regards to the acceptability of hugging, and the settings and types of relationships which frame the parameters. The acceptability of a hug varies greatly from one person to the next. The core issue, really, is not whether it is right or wrong to hug or even am I ok with hugging? Rather, the key question to ask (and answer)What is the purpose of a hug? In actuality, there are avarietyof potential purposes for hugs in work-based relationships. Hugs can be a way to show warmth (Im happy to see you), affection (You are truly import ant to me) and gratitude (Thank yousomuch for all youve done for me.) But we must balance the warmth and respect we want to show someone with the boundaries of whats appropriate. There may be alternative actions which could be done to convey the same message desired by the person who wants to give a hug to someone else.In the case of hugging, the recipient gets to define whats best for them. Hugging is not for everyone and it can make some people extremely uncomfortable. Each person gets to define how much personal space they want, and it is important to remember that some people have been victims of physical or sexual abuse.Understanding that other people are different than youThe premise of both the Love Languages and Languages of Appreciation, is knowing your language and also realizing that other people prefer other languages. To successfully communicate love or appreciation, you have to do it inthe language (and actions) most valuable to the recipient. This is an important remind er that its not about whatyouwant. The fact that you are a hugger or that you need a hug is not a sufficient reason to ignore someone elses wish not to be touched. So, how do we find balance in the workplace? The first step is to accept the premise that the recipient of a physical gesture isalwaysthe person who has the authority to determine what is an acceptable form of physical touch to them. When in doubt, ask first.Exclaiming, I am so happy for you and asking, May I give you a hug? is more appropriate than exclaiming, I am so happy for you while simultaneously giving them a hug, and then stating, Sorry, I couldnt help myself - Im just naturally a huggerTalking about touch and especially hugging ahead of time is important. The responsibility seems to fall especially to those individuals on both ends of the spectrum. For those who do not want to be touched (or specifically, hugged) by colleagues, you should take the initiative and say something like Ive observed you seem fairly c omfortable with hugs, but I need to let you know that hugging feels uncomfortable to me and I would request you honor that boundary for me. For those who are huggers, you would be wise to have a conversation with your coworkers and state I grew up in a family and culture where hugging was a normal part of life, and often giving a hug is a natural response for me. I want to respect everyones boundaries and will try to think before I act, but if I happen to slip and make a mistake, please let me know.An important next step is tofigure out and use other ways to communicate warmth like greeting someone warmly with a smile, looking the person in the eyes, shaking their hand, accompanied by a enthusiastic, Im so happy to meet you (or whatever the appropriate verbal communication is.)ConclusionPhysical touch in the workplace can bebothvery positive and healthy, andextremely unhealthy and damaging, depending on the individuals involved, the types of touch, and the cultural context. This fact , I believe, contributes to the strongly held beliefs on both sides of the issue. And, given the individual and cultural differences involved, both perspectives are equally valid. Hence, the dilemma (and discussion) about physical touch in the workplace will probably continue.Note ALWAYS make sure you know your companys policy on touch and physical interaction in the workplace. If you are unsure, check with your supervisor or Human Resources Officer to make sure you fully understand the legal boundaries laid out by your employer. This article originally appeared on Appreciation at Work. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from jngste im bunde Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Write a Resume with No Experience
How to Write a Resume with No Experience How to Write a Resume with No Experience Best Actor Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne confessed on Conan that he lied on his resume, claiming he was a skilled equestrian when auditioning for Elizabeth I. This backfired during filming, when he found himself clinging for dear life to the back of an enormous stallion, flanked by 40 stuntmen. The director Tom Hooper comes from behind Helen Mirren with a huge loud speaker and goes, Youre a fing liar, Redmayne, he said. For people with resumes showing no workexperience in their desired fields Do bedrngnis follow in the hoof-trodden footsteps of Eddie Redmayne. There are safer ways.Instead, as a beginning job seeker, the best way to showcase your potential is to focus on quality over quantity. Learn more fromthese four points1. No experience resume formatAfunctional resume formatis a top format for resumes with no work experience. This format highlights skills above all else. Your skills, no matter where you ve gained or used them (school, volunteering, or elsewhere), take the top billing. You can also play up your educationand even include relevant coursework- but be selective. Your resume isnt a transcript. The functional resume format leaves employment at the bottom. Instead of detailed listings for each role, include just the company name, dates, and titles. (Some employers are wary of any formats aside from the strictly traditional on the assumption that only people trying to hide things about their work histories choose alternative resume formats.)You arent limited to paid, professional roles. On average, hiring managers spend only six secondslooking at an individual resume. By putting what you wish to call attention to at the top, you increase your odds that its whathiring managers will notice and remember about you.No work experience? No problem. (Photo credit geschftsleben Insider)2. You can use a career profile without experienceThis may sound counterintuitive for people just sta rting out in their careers. The fact is, a traditional resume objective tells employers all about what you want from them. Career profiles- also known as career or resume summaries- highlight your standout skills, and how you can use them to a companys benefit.RememberA company thats hiring is a company that has a problem. Maybe someone left, maybe they have more orders than they can handle, maybe theyre expanding to a new market. The point is, applying for a job is your chance to show a company how you can solve whatever problem theyre facing. An effective career profile lets you do this right off the bat. Some tipsIt should be no longer than two sentencesBe direct and specific (dont use the same buzzwords everyone else uses. What sets you apart?)Keep it focused outward- not on your wants as a job seeker, but on their needs as a companyEven better, career profiles are perfectopportunities to add in resume keywords. These are the skills and qualifications in your resume that match th e skills and qualifications in the job posting. Think QuickBooks, project management, and database maintenance- or even horseback riding.3. Resume keywords in place of experienceResume keywords are important because they are what fruchtwein applicant tracking systems (ATS) use to filter, file, and rate resumes. An ATS is a type of software used for recruiting purposes by up to 90 percent of employers today. The more resume keywords you have in your resume that match the job posting, the more qualified the ATS will deem your resume. (Up to a point- many ATS also penalize job seekers who appear to be keyword stuffing. And remember, any human who reads your resume has to be impressed, too. A spammy-sounding resume wont get you far.)Unfortunately, many job seekers- especially first-time job seekers- are unaware of ATS.Resume keywordsmust be written so the ATS can recognize them. Jobscan, a resume optimization tool,is designed to help you match up your keywords- and moreIt rates your resu mes compatibility to the desired jobIt helps you identify which resume keywords you should prioritizeIt tells you how to format resume keywords (for example, MSW vs. Master of Social Work)4. Use active voicePassive voice Was given the opportunity to exercise research and communication skills by publishing work in a quarterly journal.Active voiceSharpened research and communication skills by publishing original work in a quarterly journal. This might seem like a small detail, but it makes a huge difference. Forgoing the passive voice, and concentrating on resume action words, can take your resume to the next level. It not only allows you to appear more confident, it also cuts out unnecessary filler words (e.g., was, the). Remember, hiring managers will not waste time sifting through wordy sentences.Hiring managers understand that everyone is at some point a first-time job seeker. And by following these steps, you can have a strong resume- even if you dont have years of experience.

The Top 5 Ways to Get Noticed on LinkedIn
The Top 5 Ways to Get Noticed on LinkedIn The Top 5 Ways to Get Noticed on LinkedIn Ive written before about why its so important to be on LinkedIn, but just setting up a profile isnt enough. Once youre there, you need to get noticed (otherwise whats the point?).Primarily when looking for a job, you should be using LinkedIn to stay in touch with, and expand your network. but there are also what I call passive benefits. Just by being on the site and being visible, you can attract the attention of recruiters, HR executives and hiring managers who use LinkedIn to find candidates. The problem is that these people wont find you if all you do is create an account, fill in some of your details and then sit back and wait for the emails to come in. But there are easy things you can do to make yourself visible on the site. Here are my top 5Fill in a complete profileUnless you complete all sections of the profile, you will miss out on opportunities. Create a strong introduction, put as many keyw ords as you can into the specialties, list and write about every job you have held, and include all schools you attended, as well as any trade associations you belong to. Theres no way of knowing which of these criteria a recruiter will search on, so making sure everything is there is the fastest way to high visibility.Heres more from me on how to write a great LinkedIn profile.Add as many connections as you canLinkedIn provides easy tools that allow you to find people you know. Make use of all of them. The more people you are connected to, the more visible you will be in searches.Join groupsLinkedIn groups allows you to network with other people in your field or industry, but it also gives you the opportunity to increase your visibility by joining in the discussions. Take that opportunity Recruiters will often scan groups looking for good candidates show them you are one by proving thoughtful answers and comments.Answer questionsLinkedIn Answers is a feature that allows anyone to ask a question. Find it under the More tab along the top of your home page after logging in. You will be able to search for questions in your area of expertise (for example marketing) and you can also see recent questions asked by people in your network. Answers are an excellent way to demonstrate expertise as well as to help others a key secret to successful networking.Regularly update your positionEveryone in your network sees your status updates when you post them, so this is an excellent way to make yourself visible to those who know you. If you are currently looking for work (and that isnt a secret) its a good idea to post updates on your search once in a while. All it takes is for your update to be noticed by one of your contacts who knows about an available opportunity and you may secure yourself an interview.LinkedIn is an amazing job search tool but its only as good as the effort you put in.
